ENTERTAINMENT
When I was growing up we did not take very much time for entertainment. I worked with my father , as he was self employed, and we worked 6 days a week with Sundays being church related functions. Since I have left home, I still do not spend very much time in entertainment focused activities, compared to what I have seen other people do, but I do spend more time now than I did as a kid. One of the things we enjoy doing is watching movies and over the years I have seen my share. Movie delivery systems and technology has changed dramatically. We have moved from the early black and white, silent pictures to the 3D color pictures of today. The delivery systems have progressed from the early projection systems to DVD’s,, pay per view movies right on your TV, and full length movie downloads on your home computer! A home computer? When grandma was growing up, (from around 1910 forward), there was no such a word as “computer” especially not “home computer”. In addition there was no TV in each home until the late 1960′s, in fact not every home even had a radio, or a telephone at this time, most did but not all homes. The early established entertainment systems we have had, include the “Victrola”, or phonograph record player, the radio, if you had one, reading, family board games, live stage shows and the cinema, or movies. The first commercial TV’s , in the early 1960′s, were black and white and had very small screens. Color TV’s came later.
I have said all this to give some credibility to the fact that we, as humans, enjoy entertainment. One prerequisite to being a viable entertainment source is how involved we can become in whatever medium we choose to use. Many of us use these sources as escapes from our daily lives. Depending on the daily tasks we must complete to ensure a successful day, we might like to get involved in a sporting event, the evening news, or maybe a movie. Our lives have become increasingly more busy and stressful as the years have gone by. How much free time do you have each week, or even each week? What do you do with that free time? Do you find ways to cram it full or other stuff? Maybe some classes, or more hours of overtime at work, maybe, like me, you have started a business of your own? Anyway, I think it is important for us to step back, frequently, to asses our lives and to ensure that there is sufficient balance to be able to maintain our sanity. We need to take time for our family and for ourselves. I have found, for myself, that self help projects and movies / TV have been major players in helping to balance my life.
